Hey everyone! Dawn here and today I bring some unfortunate news. According to reports, San Francisco is all set up to be the first city in America to ban e-cigarettes. So then the question is what impact will this have on smokers and could an e-cigarette ban cost lives?
Before we get started
Let me say that e-cigarettes are not “good” for you. They are a cigarette, all-be-it a 21st-century cigarette. Even though there are no NEW ingredients in an e-cigarette AND almost 600 fewer ingredients than cigarettes, e-cigarettes are still just a nicotine delivery system. Since NOTHING you inhale besides clean air is “good” for you, it stands to logic that e-cigs are not a health product.
But let’s be fair, we are not comparing e-cigarettes to health products. We are comparing them to the MOST deadly consumer product in the world, burning tobacco cigarettes. In fact, tobacco-related illness has killed more people than every war combined EVER. (You are free to google that fact. It is a very unfortunate truth 🙁
To break it down
If you are a non-smoker, e-cigarettes and vapor products are TERRIBLE for you. They are addictive and they are not clean air. However, if you are a burning tobacco smoker, a ban on e-cigarettes may be a real threat to your future.
Back to the e-cigarette ban
Apparently, the Board of Supervisors for San Fransisco have decided that e-cigarettes don’t help people get off of burning tobacco, so they passed an ordinance making e-cigarette sales illegal there. And yes that includes online sales that are being delivered to a private residence. That actual wording is very clear.
“No person shall sell or distribute an electronic cigarette to a person in San Francisco”
So what does being the first city in the US to ban e-cigarettes mean for the smokers of San Francisco? Nothing good that’s for sure. Now a demographic of people that are currently using burning tobacco will not have access to an alternative nicotine delivery system. A system that is not lit on fire and does not produce tar. (Here is a Phillip Morris article where even they admit that it’s the combustion that’s most of the problem when it comes to tobacco’s harm.)
Is that really the best course for the thousands of lives that may be affected by this e-cigarette ban. I mean it’s not just smokers who are being denied an option. It’s also the loved ones of the smokers.
Is there more to this e-cigarette ban?
Yes. Sorta. What I mean is that the Board is considering a second proposed ordinance that would prohibit:
“the sale, manufacture, and distribution of tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, on City property.”
That may be a real issue for Juul Labs, which has its headquarters located in San Francisco. In response, Juul is supporting a ballot initiative that would reverse the ordinance. It’s unclear if that ballot initiative would roll back both of these ordinances or just this one.
The sad truth is that while San Francisco may be the first city to implement an e-cigarette ban, they will probably not be the last. If you like having the freedom to switch away from burning tobacco then this should definitely worry you a little bit. (Maybe even a little bit more than a little bit.)
There is a way you can get involved though. Just stay aware of what’s going on in your city’s local government. Pay attention to their announcements and if you see something that will affect your switching rights, speak up. There are a few ways you can do that.
- Write a letter. Tell them no to all e-cigarette ban (s). This is not a powerful way to voice your opinions, but it’s still your voice!
- Go to the meetings and speak your mind. Tell your smokers story and stand for what you believe in. Always remember to be polite and respectful. Most of these guys WANT to hear from you. Give them the chance to listen.
- Bring fellow smokers who made the switch, or want to! The more the merrier when it comes to testimonies!
- If you are here in Michigan, give us a call. Let us know when and where and we will do our best to show up with a few voices.
A wait-and-see situation
In a nutshell, we need to remember that these products are in a war. A war that can only be won with your voice and the voices of smokers who know what e-cigarettes could mean for the world. We know we will see more cities that implement an e-cigarette ban, we just need to keep that number as low as possible.
