FDA: Vaping Viagra is bad: Duh

Hello and welcome back to the A Clean Cigarette blog. I am Dawn your A Clean Cigarette blogger and I am glad you are here today.  I have to say I had a blog topic all picked out and Thought that I knew what we would be talking about. Unfortunately, a rather odd headline I saw recently has changed my mind. So instead of a great blog full of new information, we are going to talk about something that I NEVER thought we would have to talk about. Today we are going to talk about why it is a BAD, BAD, BAD idea to vape prescription meds like viagra. Yes, you heard me right…. unfortunately.

The whole story on vaping viagra

A vapor company named “HelloCig” received a letter this week from the FDA demanding it removes some lines of its e-liquid off of retail shelves. The reason they gave strait out blew my mind. Apparently, this HelloCig place had a few different “health” flavors such including but not limited to flavors like the one shown in the image below.

Clearly, from that image, you can see this flavor is one that contains a prescription drug. In this case, a drug called Cialis which is designed to treat ED (erectile dysfunction).  Yea, there are folks out there that actually think its a good idea to vape a prescription drug that effects their genital health. Sure how the heck could that go wrong?!?!?!?!?!?!?

The Cialis is not the only questionable product the FDA called these guys on. Altho many of the products named in the FDA call out have been scrubbed from the internet. With good reason. Now that the FDA has issued the letters it HelloCig has a limited time to remove all named “health” flavors” from the market.  If they don’t they can face possible fines, business closure or criminal charges.

The FDA Press Release

In a press release issued on October 11th the FDA had this to say about vaping prescription meds:

“There are no e-liquid products approved to contain prescription drugs or any other medications that require a doctor’s supervision. Prescription drugs are carefully evaluated and labeled to reflect the risks of the medications and their potential interactions with other medicines, and vaping active drug ingredients is an ineffective route of delivery and can be dangerous. There are no e-liquids that contain prescription drugs that have been proven safe or effective through this route of administration,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. “This action is part of FDA’s broader effort to regulate the safety of vaping products, and crack down on misleading claims and illegal and dangerous e-liquids that may entice youth or put consumers at risk.”

Making matters worse.

In case selling e-liquid laced with dangerous prescription meds was not bad enough, HelloCig decided it could get so much worse.

How? Well, by claiming in writing on their website that these very dangerous e-liquids are US FDA Approved!!! I am not kidding, although I seriously wish I were.

Obviously, these products are not only NOT FDA approved but they are not even legal to have on the market. Hellocig’s audacity and complete lack of care for this industry and the smokers who count on it, blows my mind.

They will shut us down.

If companies like this keep doing stuff like this how can we blame the FDA for stepping in? I mean how mad can I get at a government agency whose JOB it is is to protect consumers if they are just doing their job?  Prescription drugs like these ones are not only NOT tested or approved for inhalation. They can also have dangerous interactions with other medications that consumers may be on at the time. In addition, people with high blood pressure are really putting their lives at risk if they vape drugs like these. So please DON’T!

If as an industry we do not call out and name awful companies like this they will cost the rest of us smokers the first real nicotine option we have been given. And that could cost as many as 6.6 million smoker’s lives over the next 10 years. That is unacceptable.

The bottom line.

For the consumer: Be careful what e-liquid you buy and if possible buy closed cartridge units that can not be added too. Products containing ANY prescription or even over the counter drug other than nicotine should be avoided in 99.99999% of the cases.  Stick with companies you can trust. Also feel free to ask questions. If a company can not answer questions about what is in its products. Pick a different company.

If you would like to see what is in our products visits HERE for a lab analysis.

For the Industry: If you are a company that is selling and marketing to youth OR putting things like prescription drugs in your e-liquid. We will be rooting for the FDA to get you. We DO NOT WANT YOU in our industry. Do us all a favor and take a long walk off a short pier with your business plan.

For the rest of us who are just trying to help smokers for real….Rock on with your awesome selves, 6 mill lives depend on it!

  1. I can’t believe a company would do such a thing! Why would they want to jeopardize their own business and possibly hurt their customers ? This is why I chose A Clean Cigarette as my e-cig
company. Great product, informed sales people and responsible ownership.
