E-Cigarettes and Health Risks

Hello and welcome! Dawn here your A Clean Cigarette brand electronic cigarette blogger. Thank you so much for stopping in. Today, we are going to take a hard look at a few recently released bits of evidence regarding electronic cigarettes. We will break them down and get to the bottom of what the Science actually says vs what some of the headlines I have seen around try to make it seem. Make sure to read all the way through to the third and final study. It’s GREAT news.

First up:  (Click heading for a link to the study)

Adolescent Exposure to Toxic Volatile Organic Chemicals From E-Cigarettes

Important Note: This study is Published in a peer-reviewed journal.

What the headlines say: “Vaping delivers cancer-causing chemical” and “Research proves e-cigarettes are not safe”

What the Science says:  This study took a very small group of kids that averaged about 16.5 years old. They tested the ones that had never used an e-cigarette or smoked burning tobacco, the ones who had used both and the ones that had only used e-cigarettes or vapes.

Results?

  • Kids that smoked neither, had no smoking or nicotine related carcinogens
  • Kids that used burning tobacco had large amounts of smoking-related carcinogens
  • Kids who used only e-cigarettes had more smoking-related carcinogens than kids who didn’t use anything and way less than kids who used burning tobacco.

While it has very few participants and is considered a low power study, it does sound about right. Nothing you inhale besides clean air is good for you. IF you are a non-smoker, never start. This study proves why we say this. If however you already smoke cigarettes, then according to this study switching to electronic cigarettes would reduce your exposure to carcinogens. (Hey, we are not claiming it, they said it, we are just reporting it 😉 )

Number 2 in our line up:  (Click heading for a link to the study)

“A cross-sectional study reveals an association between electronic cigarette use and myocardial infarction,”

Important Note: This study is NOT Published in a peer-reviewed journal.

OKay on this one I refuse to say “what the science says.” and let me tell you why. This is being talked about as a study, but what it is, is a KNOWN anti-e-cigarette activist putting forth propaganda. The paper as of now has not been excepted by a single medical or scientifical journal for publication for a few reasons. Here is a quote from THIS news article that sums it up the best.

“Professor Michael Siegel highlighted a glaring error in the “research”. The paper was based on data collected by the Centers for Disease Control, and that data simply isn’t capable of saying what Glantz claims it does. CDC asked people whether they vaped or smoked, and whether they’d had a heart attack – but not when the heart attack happened.”

Professor Michael Siegel went on to say that in many cases the REASON a person seeks out an alternative to smoking is that they have had a heart attack. That attack motivated the switch in many cases. So what this study ACTUALLY proves is that 42% of the surveyed vapers had a heart attack at some point, before or after vaping……

I can not speak for other types of electronic cigarettes but I CAN say that here at A Clean Cigarette it is VERY common for new customers to tell us they recently had a heart attack, or a family member had one and that the reason they are in our stores today is for that very reason. But the fact that this study did not prove what it claims to prove did not stop the author from releasing the information to the media. The fact that no medical journal will publish it, did not stop the media from reporting on it like it was real data. Go figure.

Last but certainly NOT least or 3rd study of the day:

“Health impact of E-cigarettes: a prospective 3.5-year study of regular daily users who have never smoked”

Important Note: This study is Published in a peer-reviewed journal.

The headlines: What Headlines? This is not being covered by big media in any way that I can find. Sure the bad stuff gets ratings. The good stuff never sees the light of media day.

What the Science Says:

This study took a small number of never smokers who were using vapes and e-cigarettes and studied the lung health of those never-smokers over a course of three and a half years. When the testing was done and all the data evaluated they found something better then we at A Clean Cigarette had ever dared to hope in regards to lung damage when associated with inhaling e-cigarette: No Lung Damage. Yep, none. That is spectacular!

Now the study itself is one of low power, that means very few participants. So we would like to see more studies of this type with more active study subjects. In the meantime, it is nice to see statements like the one below about e-cigarette research.

“Even the heaviest of users displayed no signs of lung damage or inflammation, and no changes in blood pressure or heart rate were observed.”

Keep in mind this is one of the very first long-term studies we have seen that used NEVER smokers who now use vapes. That means we can see for the first time what vapor and e-cigarettes do to lungs without the damage already caused by traditional burning tobacco use.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this all the way through. These studies for better or worse are looking at things that we need to know as A Clean Cigarette brand e-cigarette smokers. 2. Deleasha Thank You for Your comments , You are are a very credible source being that You talk to users of the electronic cigarette 30 to 40 a week all over America , and You have switched from burning tobacco to A Clean Cigarette and Your lungs have improved incredibly , Cary

  3. Dawn, I appreciate you putting this in words that we can all understand. Once in awhile I will have a Customer very confused by what the media reports and I make sure to try and put their mind at ease but it is great to be able to direct them to your blog for lots of additional info.

  4. It always amazes me that the media gets away with spinning and highlighting ONLY negative news…and the general public only picks up on the headlines…not the whole story! Thanks for bring us ‘the rest of the story!’

  5. Dawn Thank you for all your hard work! This is really great to know. I agree the media will only show the bad. I will continue to share all your blogs in hopes others with read and get informed. You Do a Great job!

  6. Wow this is really something I can’t wait to see what they try to put out a fact next Dawn we really appreciate you finding the real facts keep fighting big pharma, big tobacco, and big media we got this~Karen

  7. Thanks for the break down. Never put the good news out for people to see and read about. Think they still could of used adults in all of there studys.

    1. Only one study was with minors, but I totally see why you would like to see these studies done more and on adult smokers.

  8. Thank you Dawn for keeping us and everyone else informed. i think that ecigs vs burning tobacco is simply picking the lesser of the 2 evils. for that reason i believe this has to be looked at as harm reduction -Chad

  9. Dawn, Thank you for your continuous dedication for keeping us all informed; for breaking down and explaining the issues clearly; and you are beast for digging out the facts and the truth. Well done My Lady!-Sue

  10. I was especially happy with the results from the third study you reviewed (even though the panel was small) I look forward to more test results on long term use of e-cigs and effects on the human body. The way I feel since I have replaced burning tobacco with my Clean Cigarette is night and day. I believe that those long term tests will reflect the results that I feel in my own body! Thank you Dawn for bringing this great info to light and “de-bunking” the fools for profit- Dana

  11. These kind of study crack me up. It’s like when they say the use of e-cigs have gone up like 400% in 10 years well when U start at next to none and 10 people start that is a huge increase lol! It’s just sad on these kind of studies to get National publicity I’ve had people calling me from Mississippi when I live Michigan.

  12. Our Blog is such an important tool in our fight against big tobacco and the negative media; and for our continued mission at ACC of smokers helping smokers. I don’t have face book…etc., but I’m often mentioning the Blog at the store: Have you seen the latest Blog…or keeping it up for customers to read right there. When someone is confused or concerned on what the media is saying, the Blog is an excellent resource to refer them to. Cary Lee you built this company under the covenant of God. “If the Lord stands before me, then who shall stand against me.” The Promised Land was not achieved by a walk in the park! -Sue

  13. I think it’s great that in the midst of such vague and biased literature we are doing our best to affirm the portions that speak truth about ecigarettes while calling out the loose and sometimes even false claims. We are doing a great thing by putting this information out there! Hopefully our voice is heard and people take notice.

  14. Awesome Read, Glad too see more reports coming out on people who have only used E-cigarettes.. Thanks for all the hardwork and research you do for us Dawn. Keep up the great work

  15. Thank you so much for all you do Dawn. There will always be negative people but that is when we smile and know the truth will be known. Thank you again for your research you work so hard at. Lori

  16. Thank you so much for putting forth the effort to gather and share this information Dawn! The study with the group who have only smoked e-cigarettes is very exciting! No lung damage, blood pressure or heart rate changes! Would be very curious to see more studies like this one! Thank you for everything, very excited for the future! – Zach

  17. This is a very detailed and well thought out response to many of the negative news stories and propaganda that have been circulated by the media lately against electronic cigarettes. You did an excellent job commenting on the research described here and backed your conclusions up with evidence from the literature. My only suggestion would be to add a link to the title of the third study the same way that you did with the first two studies if this is possible. Nice work with this blog, and thank you for helping us to stay informed about both sides of the science that exists on electronic cigarettes. Good scientific research is always unbiased, and it would be nice if it was presented that way more often.

  18. I’m glad we have you sifting through to find relevant information. There is a serious problem of people spreading half baked information with nothing to back it up. I really enjoyed being able to follow the links back to the sources. I copy and pasted the third headline in the search bar and found the study at https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-14043-2 it is a very detailed read. The article is citing Scientific Reports Volume 7, Article number: 13825. I only mention that because I truly appreciate your tenacity dedication to finding accessible information that isn’t being widely reported. I hope that researchers will now reproduce these studies with larger samples of e-cig and vape users. I think we all know they would end with a more impactful study with extremely similar results.

  19. First of all I like to Thank God for people who care about people, also thank God for using Mr. Cary & Mona Lee for coming up with a awesome alternate way of smoking that is less harmful in so many ways, not only health wise in an individual, but in second hand smoke, house fires, smelling stinky, tasting food, no hacking, its a private and personal thing, that only a smoker can relate to, burning tobacco is a bad habit, which can be broken with a clean cigarette. Our love ones are proud, happy, and are joining our clean cigarette family and they truly believe we are very much interested in their well being, not for self gain. i’am a witness this company is all about giving love, receiving love, spreading love and we all should know God is Love. So for me I’am PROUD to be a part of this wonderful fantastic company, as a customer for a year and half, and now as a employee going on four years. Thank you because family always takes care of each other. I love you all and Pray Gods Blessing upon each and everyone of you and your families as well.

  20. Thank you vert much for the information. I feel this is a positive step confronting the stigma of using vapes and e cigarettes straight.

  21. Hi Dawn. The results on the testing of the children are a good reference point for the public to consider. Good research on your part and I am enjoying it. Keep going.

    Bob, Larch Lansing

  22. Media will always display the negative over the positive. It impacts people more. Try and think of the negative points in your past…now try and think of the positives. You will ALWAYS remember more negative points. Why? They affected you more and hit you harder. The media knows you will forget the positive quickly and you will talk about the negative more. End of rant.

  23. I always say that negative information will travel further than good information just because people are so quick to tell people about a negative experience rather than the 6 good things that happened. The media is just looking for ratings. It’s people like you Dawn, that get the correct information and put it out there to smack those others in the face with a TRUTH BOMB. Thank you for being so dedicated.
