Welcome and thank you for stopping in! Dawn here, your loyal A Clean Cigarette blogger. As always I started my blog day looking at all the newest info on electronic cigarettes. Sometimes it’s the same old news different day. Sometimes I get to beaking around and find a great little story that is new and fresh and I think it will be entertaining. Occasionally, though (Way more often lately) I find HUGE news that is SO big it makes me stop everything to focus only on that bit of news.
That is exactly what happened today. Being me, poking around the internet, trolling facebook pages and bam I find a post on one of the pages (Tip’s hat at Gregory Conley. Thanks for sharing!)
Here is the post I saw:
Which of course meant I had to click on it and figure out what a “Cautious thumbs-up” really means. Clicking on the post led me to an article on this site:
Which claimed that:
“The American Cancer Society is recommending — with caution — to health care clinicians that they add electronic cigarettes and vaporizers as a smoking-cessation option.”
I like the sound of that but I mean what Exactly did they say?!?! So being me I had to find out and when I went digging I found this page on the American Cancer Society’s website:
Where I found these quotes: (The Pink is my thought on each quote)
- “Based on currently available evidence, using current generation e-cigarettes is less harmful than smoking cigarettes, but the health effects of long-term use are not known.” (Nice, not surprising info but nice to hear from these guys for sure! As for the long-term use risk, we will have to wait and see. Of course, we already know that the long-term risk of use of burning cigarettes is DEATH, so I mean it’s not a hard standard of health to beat…just saying.)
- “Some smokers, despite firm clinician advice, will not attempt to quit smoking cigarettes and will not use FDA approved cessation mediations. These individuals should be encouraged to switch to the least harmful form of tobacco product possible; switching to the exclusive use of e-cigarettes is preferable to continuing to smoke combustible products.” (Did they REALLY just say that?!?!?!?! My mind = Blown. Seriously they just said that e-cigarettes are the “LEAST HARMFUL FORM OF TOBACCO PRODUCT POSSIBLE!!! I feel that I need say no more on this.)
- “The ACS recommends that clinicians support all attempts to quit the use of combustible tobacco and work with smokers to eventually stop using any tobacco product, including e-cigarettes.” (Agreed, nothing you inhale besides clean air is good for you. Quitting all forms of nicotine delivery is the best thing to do, but for those of us that can’t or won’t, it’s good to know that our options are getting better!)
- “The ACS has always supported any smoker who is considering quitting, no matter what approach they use; there is nothing more important that they can do for their health.” (Agreed, again. There is nothing that you can do that will be better for your health as a smoker, then quit smoking.)
I shared the quotes above because they were the ones I like the best. That being said there is a lot of information in this document that if you have time, is worth the read. It’s rather short for a document of this type and will only take a few minutes. You will see that they seriously warn against non-smokers and minors using an e-cigarette. So do we. These things are addictive. Never willingly start an addiction. If you do not smoke, do not start, even with an e-cigarette.
They also talk about how FDA approved products should be considered first as well as cold turkey, but they say if those options are not options for the smoker then an e-cigarette is the next best thing they can do for themselves. That is all we have ever wanted them to say. The goal here is to get us smokers off of burning tobacco, I don’t give a rat’s behind how you get off the deadly stuff just DO IT! If you have tried and tried and just can’t, come talk to me about a switch, it’s the next best thing to quitting, just ask the American Cancer Society. 😉
Thank you so much for visiting today. I hope this was as mind-blowing for you as it was for me! I will be paying close attention to see what the American Lung Association and other groups like it will do now that the ACS has stepped up to support e-cigarettes as alternatives to burning tobacco.
