A Peek Inside the 2017 E-Cigarette Summit: Part VII

Those of you who have been following this blog series are probably aware that the E-Cigarette Summit which was held on May 8th of this year in Washington D.C. is the first annual of its type here in the US. On the other hand, this Summit which has been held for the last four years in the UK has a solid enough reputation that is attracted some amazing names in the scientific and regulatory reform communities.

Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos M.D
Research Fellow
Onassis Cardiac Surgery Greece, Department of Pharmacology, University of Patras, Greece

For the last few weeks, we have been talking about the speakers that attended the event and what information they were able to provide. While all the speakers have spectacular credentials and great information, the speaker we will talk about today is by far my personal favorite, ┬áDr.Konstantinos Farsalinos. If you are a regular reader of this blog then you may very well recognize this great man’s name from more than a few of our evidence-based┬ápost’s.┬áDr. Farsalinos comes to us from the┬áDepartment of Pharmacology, University of Patras, Greece. His work in tobacco studies is world renowned and he has been actively studying e-cigarettes since 2011.

A great example of the notable work Dr. Farsalinos has been a part of in the past is the “Safety evaluation and risk assessment of electronic cigarettes as tobacco cigarette substitutes: a systematic review”, which is one of the first of its type that┬áDr. Farsalinos co-authored with Dr. Riccardo Polosa. In that paper, the two doctors took around 100 separate┬ápieces of evidence┬áregarding electronic cigarettes and vapor products and concluded that “ECs are a revolutionary product in tobacco harm reduction. Although they emit vapor, which resembles smoke, there is literally no fire (combustion) and no ÔÇśfireÔÇÖ (suspicion or evidence that they may be the cause for disease in a similar way to tobacco cigarettes). Due to their unique characteristics, ECs represent a historical opportunity to save millions of lives and significantly reduce the burden of smoking-related diseases worldwide.”┬áSo you can see why I was so excited to┬áDr. Farsalinos name on the speaker’s line-up.

He did not let me down either!┬áDr. Farsalinos’s lecture was titled “E-Cigarette Safety and Risk Profile – Methodology and Relevance”. From the name alone you can tell that┬áDr. Farsalinos’s level of education about the topics he discusses is at an extremely high level. His lecture was full of source material from a multitude of studies. He not only talked about the evidence supporting e-cigarettes he responded to a few pieces of what he called poorly done studies that appeared to provide negative evidence against the electronic cigarette and vapor products, and his efforts to dissect and duplicate those studies.

One of the most famous studies he called out during his lecture was the one that circulated a while back about Formaldehyde┬áproduction in these products. In that study, according to Dr. Farsalinos, the researchers used a largely inappropriate level of power to heat the e-liquid to a point that the product produced a phenomenon called “Dry Puff”. Basically, according to┬áDr. Farsalinos, this “harsh and unpleasant” puff would not be something consumers would ever come in contact with while using a properly working vapor product and if they did taste this type of puff, they would not continue using the product due to its grossly unpleasant characteristics. He then stated that he had attempted to duplicate this science and had even attempted to reach out to the original researchers to obtain information on their methods in order to increase the likely hood of finding their results.

According to Dr. Farsalinos, the researchers who participated in the formaldehyde study have been very difficult to reach and either can not or will not reveal their methods and study subjects. That is very odd, most GOOD science research paper participants are excited when a man of Dr. Farsalinos caliber would like to replicate their study. If he would have been able to duplicate it, then his duplication would have added credibility to their science. Of course, he still attempted to do so without their help, his results though were completely different and in fact worked to clear up otherwise questionable study results. We have done a blog in the past on this study too. The study has been called bad science by not just Dr. Farsalinos, but by many experts in the field, with most experts saying that the power source used in this study is the equivalent of hooking a car battery up to your products.

Dr. Farsalinos’s lecture referred to a number of studies and a ton of highly useful information that resulted from these projects. His lecture was peppered with phrases like “One size does not fit all” and “Give them (smokers) free choice” my favorite though was his a statement he made regarding one study that showed that toxins found in e-cigarette users were similar to levels that are found in non-smokers.

For my Part: When I had the opportunity to meet this amazing man at the summit, I felt a lot like a fan girl at a boy band concert. He is one of the people I respect the most in this industry and I am VERY thankful that a man of his caliber works so hard to find the truth behind e-cigarettes. His stance on making things as easy for smokers to make the switch as possible is encouraging to say the least. Since I began down the e-cigarette road here at A Clean Cigarette, I have known that this industry has a real chance at changing the futures of over a billion smokers, Dr. Farsalinos being on my side, gives me a sense of wellbeing that my goal and the goal of A Clean Cigarette to offer real options to smokers, is a good one. Thank you, Dr. Farsalinos for not laughing at me when I could hardly get a word out while trying to talk to you. Thank you also for caring as much for the billion smokers as you do. With men like you on the side of truth, then truth has a real chance of being heard.

Much like two weeks ago, this blog has gotten out of hand word count wise, we are at nearly 1300 right now. With your time in mind, I am going to call it quits for the day and do a part VII.2 later this week. Check back on Friday to hear about two speakers who have a bit of a different view on e-cigarettes based on their regulatory experience. I look forward to doing that blog, and I hope you will join me them.
