E-cigs on a plane!? What you need to know about air travel and electronic cigarettes.

CleanCigaretteLogo(13Hello again, it’s Dawn here and today on the A Clean Cigarette blog we are going to chat about something that has been all over media sites for a while. Electronic cigarettes and air planes. What are the rules and why are they the rules? Can you check your e-cigarettes? What’s the best way to travel with an Electronic cigarette? What about carry on, is that allowed? Will my electronic cigarette set off the smoke alarm in the bathroom? These are just a few of the questions we hear in regards too air travel and e-cigs. Let’s take a look at what the law says, what etiquette says and what your options are.

It’s important to note that I will only be answering these questions for cig-a-like styles of electronic cigarette such as A Clean Cigarette brand electronic cigarettes. If you are a Mod or tank model user, and need to travel with liquid or large tank like devices, please check with your supplier for any information you may need. If they are unable to help you, consider changing your supplier!

Checked Baggage Rules: According to a new rule announced on October 27th 2015 by the Department of Transportation (DOT), electronic cigarettes are no longer aloud on checked baggage while traveling by air. Why? Well the why is simple and we agree with it. Electronic cigarettes are typically powered by Lithium Ion batteries, this is true with A Clean Cigarette brand electronic cigarettes as well. Lithium Ion batteries are small light weight batteries that are also commonly found in cell phones. The reason they are used so often is that they hold a powerful charge for a long time with a relatively small battery. That’s great and all, but when they are stored in the non-pressurized luggage compartment of a plane, they can and will catch on fire. Since being safe is best and neither the passengers or the air line companies want a plane to catch on fire at 30,000 feet you can understand why this new rule is in place.

Carry-on Luggage Rules: Okay, here things get a little simpler. If you are going to travel with an electronic cigarette this is the best way to go. There are currently no rules from either TSA or the DOT in regards to carrying electronic cigarettes on board. Weather in your bag or in your pocket you should be fine. If you are carrying them in your pocket though please remember to remove them and tuck them in your bag while going through security. No point in drawing unnecessary attention to your electronic cigarette by setting off the metal detector as you go through it!

Smoking you E-cig on the Plane: So here is the thing. A while back the TSA talked about making using electronic cigarettes on planes illegal. As of now that has not happened exactly. They say that since it is smoking it could be under the same rule as burning tobacco. Not everyone agrees with that statement. Check out this article by CNN to help you understand the argument. Click Here. As of now we suggest you listen to what ever airline you are flying with. Recently I went to Las Vegas and smoked my e-cigarette the whole way. I was not asked to stop although I made it a point to be very courteous with my vapor. That means I took small drags and held them in a bit to minimize the visible vapor that I released. If they had asked me to stop, I would have. So be courteous and don’t draw attention to yourself and you may be fine, but be sure to listen to your flight crew if they ask you to stop,. What they say goes!

What About Smoke Detectors? Alright so what if you are on a plane and they have not asked you not to use your e-cigarette but you don’t really feel comfortable puffing on it in the cabin? Can you take a trip to the bathroom and have a few safe scentless hits without setting off the smoke detector? The answer is maybe. If you are using a big mod that produces large vape clouds the answer is no, however with A Clean Cigarette we have a minimal visible puff of “smoke” so as long as you do not blow it directly into the smoke detector you may be fine. Check out THIS short YouTube video that shows vapor devices much larger than ours and how they effect smoke detectors. If it takes three direct puffs to set off that detector from a device that creates vape clouds like that, then I would feel pretty secure puffing on my A Clean Cigarette near a smoke alarm. That being said I make no promises, so use your judgment when the time comes, and don’t blow your vapor directly at the device!

So there you have it. All things electronic cigarettes and airplane related! At least most of it. If you can think of any other questions or concerns I should chat about here on the blog just drop me an e-mail to AccAnswers@gmail.com. 1. I was able to bring my e-cig with me the last time I traveled through my hand carry bag. We were on air for an hour or two so there’s no need for me to smoke inside the plane. I am not sure if I could held it in for longer hours without smoking so I’m glad I was able to read this entry for an idea if ever situation arises.
